NAFTA ENVIRONMENT COMMISSION WANTS AN ADMINISTRATOR

The Secretariat for the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) is
seeking candidacies to fill the position of Administrator. The Administrator
will be responsible for development of policies, guidelines, procedures and
supporting budgets and for the provision of related services in such
domains as

IISD ANNOUNCES YOUTH INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The International Sustainable Development (IISD) is seeking candidates for a
Youth Internship Program. The program builds upon on the success of a 199798
pilot program with initial funding from Human Resources Development Canada
(HRDC), the Sustainable Development Research Institute (SDRI) at UBC as part
of Canada's "Year of the Asia Pacific" (CYAP) in 1997. SDRI arranged thirty
intern placements for Canadian youth among "host employers" in New Zealand,
Mexico, Philippines, Indonesia, India, Pakistan, Thailand, Mongolia, Viet Nam
and China. Interns were provided a modest allowance that covered return travel
from Canada, training costs and overseas living expenses for six months
(September/October 1997 through March 1998). Information is posted now so
applicants can begin to prepare in advance. Intern applicants must be
unemployed or underemployed, under 30 and not students. Candidates should also
have an active interest in environmental and international development issues
and be pursuing related career opportunities. Deadline for youth applications

BIODIVERSITY COORDINATOR WANTED IN WASHINGTON, D.C.

The Washingtonbased Biodiversity Action Network (BIONET) seeks a
Coordinator to
lead and implement all aspects of BIONET's program. BIONET is a network of
U.S.
NGOs promoting effective biodiversity conservation programs worldwide, with a
focus on galvanizing international cooperation — including a strong U.S. role
to strengthen biodiversity policy and law. This includes, in particular,
programs that target The World Bank, Global Environment Facility (GEF) and
other intergovernmental institutions and processes. the Coordinator will plan
and implement a fourpart work program. This will entail the development of
strategic objectives, thematic campaigns and communications strategies;
execution of fundraising activities; networking with NGOs around the world;
and
supervision of two staff in the BIONET Secretariat. The ideal candidate will
have extensive experience in environmental or conservation policy, or related
fields; an advanced degree in relevant field and/or at least five years of
practical work experience in relevant areas; demonstrated organizational,
communication and media skills; fundraising experience; and experience in

IUCN, SWITZERLAND SEEKS SOCIAL POLICY FACILITATOR

The IUCN, The World Conservation Union, wishes to hire a global facilitator
for its Social Policy Programme. The Global Facilitator will help build a
global, but decentralised, social policy network of professionals with
regional
focal points and will catalyse exchanges and debate regarding the integration
of social dimensions throughout IUCN's environment and conservationwork. The
facilitator will have a pivotal role in the creation of means and measures to
better integrate social development concerns into planning and program
development. In part, s/he will catalyse capacity building, horizontal
linkages between regions, mobilisation of key resource persons, network
development and identification of professional resources at the forefront of
social dimensions of conservation. The Facilitator will be located
initially in
IUCN Headquarters in Gland, Switzerland. The Global Facilitator will have a
graduate degree or other appropriate qualification in one of the social
sciences, with extensive practical experience in areas relevant to natural
resources management. S/he will have worked creatively in and preferably

The CSIRO Tropical Agriculture in Australia is seeking to appoint an
experienced Natural Resource Economist to a Senior Research position at its
Davies Laboratory in Townsville, North Queensland, Australia. CSIRO Tropical
Agriculture conducts research for rural industries and the broader
community of
northern Australia. Research presently being conducted by the Integrated
Resource Use and Management Group of CSIRO Tropical Agriculture aims to
develop
effective tools and strategies to support decisionmaking for the sustainable
use and management of natural resources at policy, planning and enterprise
levels in northern Australia. It is initiating new R&D aimed at supporting the
sustainable development of the southern Gulf of Carpentaria and Kimberley
regions of northern Australia. We are particularly interested in strengthening
our research focus on natural resource economics to complement our existing
skills in natural resource planning and management, natural resource policy
evaluation, social impact assessment, natural resource modelling, resource
assessment, GIS and decision support systems development. The successful
candidate should have a welldeveloped conceptual and analytical ability
relating to natural resource policy evaluation and integrated and regional
approaches to natural resource planning and management. The person should have
significant research experience and a record of high achievement in natural

The University of Cambridge U.K. seeks an Assistant Director of Research in
Rural Economics, in the Department of Land Economy starting 1 October 1998 or

leading role in the Department's efforts to attract research funding and to

NEW ENGLAND FISHERIES CONTRACT GRANTS AVAILABLE

The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) has published a request for
proposals in the Federal Register, April 17, 1998, for research under the
Marine Fisheries Initiative (MARFIN) for New England. Approximately
$500,000 is
available. Projects must address at least one of the two following priorities,
which are addressed in more detail in the Federal Register notice. First,
there
are projects involving the assimilation and analysis of economic, social, and
cultural information to assist in the formulation of marine fishery management
decisions. Secondly, they will contract for projects which address species
and
information needs identified during recent Stock Assessment Workshops
hosted by
the NMFS Northeast Fisheries Science Center, Woods Hole, Massachusetts. There
is a 30day period for submitting proposals, and the deadline is 5 p.m.,
Monday,
